Hi all,

I've tried to research this but it seems I still need a little more info. I just picked up rack version of K2500. It has all the standard sounds but I want to max it out. I picked up stereo piano/contemporary rom on ebay. Is this something that I would be able to install myself? Also, what are the preferred methods of getting more sounds on here? cd's, floppy's? Do I need to updated operating system? Any info would be great . Thanks!

Absolutely.  These are designed to be user-installed.  You won’t need more than a phillips head screwdriver.

The only other module is the Orchestral ROM.  Beyond that, yes, disks or a SCSI drive (or a SCSI2SD, which is well worth it).  Just be sure you max out the sample RAM at the same time.  If you plan on using the built-in sequencing capabilities, I’d recommend installing the P/RAM expansion as well.  There’s a guy in Poland who sells an aftermarket that drops in.

I can recommend Mr. Kwiecien in Poland. I have his card with all three ROM.. When you have your Kurzweil open, you might also consider replacing the fan with one that is quieter. The Noctua was recommended here on the list and elsewhere:

https://moinsound.wordpress.com/2010/04/17/taming-a-noisy-beast-a-new-fan-for-the-kurzweil-k2600xs/

I bought one but haven't yet pulled my K2500r out of the rack to install it..

I have two K2500RS units and two K2600RS units which I purchased as "base" units and maxed them out. I used Radek's custom ROM replacements and PRAM expansions:

http://sampler-expansions.dxp.pl/ http://sampler-expansions.dxp.pl/

His ROM board contains all three ROM expansions for the K2500 -- Piano, Orchestral and Contemporary -- all on a single board, and his P/RAM expansion at US$85 is a steal.

Another really good resource is Alex Goetsman, who occasionally posts here and has many eBay auctions for K2500/K2600 parts. His email address is keyboardnj (at) gmail (dot) com (trying to fudge around Yahoo's bizarre filter...) Alex has been a real champ for me when coming up with parts for the Kurzweils.

The units I spent the most time and effort refurbing were the K2600s, which I documented here as much as I could:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/KurzList/conversations/messages/30985 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/KurzList/conversations/messages/30985
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/KurzList/conversations/messages/30986 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/KurzList/conversations/messages/30986

As has been mentioned, it's a good thing to replace the stock fan with a Noctua (or two).

Probably the most "bang for the buck" upgrade for the K25XX series is the KDFX option, just be prepared as it's a detailed install that requires adjusting voltages on the power supply. The sampling option -- it's great in that it provides a good digital output, but I've never actually used them as intended.

Another good thing to do with the K2500R is to refurbish the power supply by replacing the 2 4700uF and the big 33000uF cap. Look for any signs of swelling on the tops of these, and if there is any visible "dome", that's an indication you need to replace them soon.

Good luck!

You go to the K2500 section of Kurzweil's site:

http://kurzweil.com/product/k2500r/downloads/ http://kurzweil.com/product/k2500r/downloads/

... and download the OS for your unit (with or without KDFX) as well as the object files for the ROMs you have. If you don't have one of those floppy emulators, you'll need a USB 3.5" floppy drive and some 1.44MB DOS-formatted 3.5" diskettes.

The installation procedure is in the "readme.txt" file for the OS disk:

If upgrading from a version previous to version 5.0, it also requires the installation of the version 5.0 Base Objects. (It is also possible to use version 4.90, which is an identical file, with only a version number difference.) The v4.03 Objects files for the Options (ROM blocks and Live Mode) would also be reinstalled, if they are appropriate for your instrument. You can download these files from the Downloads page on our web site - http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com.

The complete procedure for installing the operating system is included in Chapter 2 of the K2500 Performance Guide. For your convenience, here's a summary of the procedure:

1. Copy the file K25V501.KOS onto a DOS formatted floppy.

2. Start the K2500

3. Press and release the Exit key while the "Please wait..." message is displayed. This brings up the K2500 Boot Loader.

4. Insert the operating system floppy, then use "Install System" from the K2500 Boot Loader to install the new operating system.

5. As mentioned at the top of this document, a new Object file will need to be installed (and the other object files reinstalled). Please see the README file included in the file K25_BASE_OBJECTS.ZIP for details.

6. When the installation is finished, choose "Run System" from the Boot Loader.

While you won't normally need to reinstall the operating system, you should still put the disk in a safe place, just in case you may need it again.

Note: you can also install these files from a DOS or Kurzweil formatted SCSI disk. When the display asks which device you want to install from, change the parameter to the appropriate SCSI ID. You can only install files from a SCSI disk which is 1 gig or smaller.

We recommend performing a hard reset after installing and running the new system. Choose the Reset soft button from the Master page.

You may need to upgrade the boot loader first too. When I got KDFX installed they updated the OS but not
the boot loader and then I could not add object files. I had to go back and update the boot loader before
upgrading the OS.
