[KL] K2000RS blank LCD problem, even after hard reset

Hello, all! I've been sitting on the sidelines of the group for a year or two, trying to help others, but now it looks as if I need some help myself!

Upon initial power-up of my K2000RS, not one of the 8 red LEDs lights up, but the floppy drive light does light up. However, the floppy light stays on. And that's it. Nothing appears on the LCD, but the LCD backlight is lit. Fan is operating. I thought I checked voltages last time I was in there, and they seemed fine.

I tried the "Diagnostic Mode Method" listed here:
http://kurzweil.com/knowledgebase/k2000/troubleshooting/193 http://kurzweil.com/knowledgebase/k2000/troubleshooting/193/ to reset it to factory defaults. Nada.

I removed the battery and waited 30 minutes before putting it back in. That did nothing, either.

I was looking thru my old K2000 folders and found this:
Blank LCD Problem: You turn on the machine, but the LCD is blank and you get no sound. Hard Reset solution fails.Draining the battery-backed PRAM fails. For me, the culprit was a bad IC (U23).

I looked at the schematic and U23 is a little 4-bit synchronous up/down counter chip on the audio board. To me, that seems like a pretty remote thing being wrong, so I'm hoping someone here has had some experience with this and has an idea of what it might be.

Thanks!

Upon initial power-up of my K2000RS, not one of the 8 red LEDs lights up,
but the floppy drive light does light up.
When it's on, can you get into the front-panel diagnostics by pressing
4-5-6 together?
That should blink the 8 LEDs in order, and then flash them together.
Pressing Exit+Enter gets you out of the diagnostic mode and flashes the
LEDs again.

I think the buttons and LEDs are controlled by the scanner,
but isn't the LCD driven by the main processor?

The K2000RS does not respond to panel button pushes of any kind. No effect from any switches including 1,2,3 or 4,5,6 or anything else. Zip. Nada. Nothing. Zilch.

And yes, the LCD is driven from the main processor board.

Exactly the same case with My K2500, the buttons do nothing, no LED's light
up.

Hopefully, someone here has an idea of what it could be.

Exactly the same case with My K2500, the buttons do nothing, no LED's light up.

The K2000RS does not respond to panel button pushes of any kind. No effect
from any switches including 1,2,3 or 4,5,6 or anything else. Zip. Nada.
Nothing. Zilch.
And yes, the LCD is driven from the main processor board.

Have you tried taking out the backup batteries for a few hours and then powering on?

Yes. I took them out, left them out for half an hour, and then put them back in. No change.

Same here! Lol!

I've been though a lot of diagnosis checking logic states on the IC's,
voltages etc and everything checks out as it should, I'm totally stumped with
mine.

Hopefully, someone here has an idea of what it could be.

Exactly the same case with My K2500, the buttons do nothing, no LED's light up.
Neil Hester

The K2000RS does not respond to panel button pushes of any kind. No
effectfrom any switches including 1,2,3 or 4,5,6 or anything else. Zip... Nada.
Nothing. Zilch.
And yes, the LCD isdriven from the main processor board.

I might start looking at the reset circuitry.
Maybe the reset line is stuck asserted and not letting the scanner and
main cpu come out of reset?

That is the exact same thought I had over the last week. I don’t see the system releasing itself from the power-on reset. Could be that it is being held in the wrong state by something.

Most systems assert a power-on reset signal so that all the transients can settle out of the system during the power-up period and so that everything starts in a known and proper state. Then after some time, the power-on reset line is "unasserted" so that the system can function on its merry way.
I hope someone who's been through this can let us know if we're heading down the correct path!
