Discussion:
[KL] What should I be looking to adjust

I have a few K2VX keyboards which I always load up with samples.
I have a “Take 6” kind of background vocal group sound that I like to use. Here’s the issue that has always existed, now I’m asking what I can do about it.

When I play, for example, a 3 note chord and there’s 3 voices sounding, it sounds great with all the voices being heard when I use a light to moderate touch.
If I use a heavier touch (higher velocity), 1 or 2 of the voices might fall out and I no longer hear the 3 note chord. Notes are cutting out at higher velocities.

I’d like to adjust this patch so I could use a heavier touch without losing any notes.

What should I be looking at to adjust?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Is this happening to all of your K2VX keyboards? If that's the case, it's likely that patch is trying to access a sample not loaded. Check the keymap on each layer referencing samples not loaded, usually marked with in parentheses "()". It may be the program you're using is performing velocity switching between layers. Also, some drum layers (programs with more than 3 layers) can't be accessed on all MIDI channels.

Could it be that your program has extra layers that get switched in with
higher keyboard velocity? And maybe you're running out of layers? The
K2000's ran with 24 layers, I don't know if your K2vx can do more.

From Master mode, you can go to the Voices and Stealer pages, which shows
you how the voices get allocated and reused. Maybe that will help you see
what's actually happening?

Good luck!

This particular sample has 1 layer. I've been thru the menus looking for anything that looks like it can be causing this problem, I can't see anything, don't know what I'm missing.

I'm loaded with RAM so there is no shortage.

After lots of experimenting, what I have noticed, that this problem does not occur when playing the notes below middle C. The sample does play to the top of the keyboard, however the sound is unusable at this point and I wouldn't use it, but I could really use up to the octave above middle C which still sounds great.
Again, at any velocity, all the notes sound below middle C. I can get the notes above middle C to sound only if I play those notes with less velocity.

Does this sound like a setting that can be changed, or does it sound like there's just something inherent in this particular sample?

Yes, it is possible that samples were recorded like this, that means not for sustained sounds but for staccato.

I have one vocal sound in Yamaha PSR9000 Pro arranger keyboard, which has three velocity layers, if I’m not wrong low velocity makes sustained sound “doo”, middle velocity sustained “bah” and high velocity something like staccato “dao”. That’s normal behavior. Roland instruments have similar vocal samples.

It sounds like you may have a velocity switched keymap. Edit the keymap and check if the samples for the
low velocities above middle C are unassigned or missing. If so, it should be possible to assign the high
velocity sample to the lower velocity levels.
