[KL] White Key Clacking repair for PC2

I just purchased used PC2 online. Works ok except for huge clacking noise when almost all of the white keys are released quick. I mainly purchased as bottom board Midi controller for upper PC361. It sounds and feels like outer part of white key bottoms are hitting with no felt? damping. It is really over the top loud for all the white keys except bottom octave or so and a few others. The unit was described in good working order but this makes it almost unplayable – I guess unless for loud gig.

I am thinking I have to return unless fixing of this problem would be something I could perform without huge difficulty by opening unit and replacing something (felt?) or adjusting something. Anyone had this issue and fixed it properly. No utube I found so far really address this in terms of whether each key must be worked on our some sort of more global fix. Or is it just worn out and needs total replacement – bad purchase?

Interesting is that other than that loud noise clacking all the keys play pretty good (I like action) and sound good except for C2, which sounds louder than all other keys with anything over soft pressure (maybe that rubber contact issue for that one that I saw on utube).

I need to make decision soon and will be net surfing further to see if any instructions and service manual (I already have PC361 service manual and still looking for PC2) available or utube tips – so I greatly appreciated if I can get advice here on how I might proceed and what’s involved in a potential fix.

here's the good news..yes..the rubber bumpers can be replaced..if you can find them..some folks make their own..it is very common on older Kurzweil/Fatar prods.it's the noise on rapid key-up, right?

Jon, YEP, precisely. Rapid key up loud clack. So are these rubber bumpers on a per key basis - because I would need about 60! I have not seen the inside of PC2 yet as don't want to open without good plan - but in utube I saw from end and looks like the bottom of key contacts the bottom of the rail. I suppose that is where the rubber bumper is and would have to be proper thickness match to allow key velocity sensors to trigger properly. I' do some more google searching for that part.. or ideas on home grown replacement..

(BTW - I do have a spare SP-88 I had bought new years ago that is recently dead electric but still nice quiet key action)

thanks!

Does the midi out work on the SP-88? Check it. If it does you just saved
a bunch of effort!

Nope. Quite a number of years ago at gig audio out went out (probably low voltage at place) and I continued to use SP88 midi out for my PC361 for years. Couple months ago SP-88 midi started making crazy sound out of this setup - scared me to hurt PC361 so SP88 is done--- and now looking for Midi controller as I like my setups on PC361 as slave for piano type controller. I bought PC3LE on ebay that was DOA. I now have bought this used PC2 that arrived having almost all keys clacking...

If I can fix key clack relatively easy I may keep it. So far I see the velocity segment rubbers on on Ebay but no key rail pads I assume are rubber, per above.

I don’t know, but I paid $300 for a 2500X to which I then added a sampling option and the ROMs.  After doing some repairs, I’m all in at $600 or so and the keyboard is like new. 😊

Squeaky keys is more of an issue, but I completely reconditioned the key bed.  Had to replace two of the number key buttons as well, but those are cheap.

I don’t know, but I paid $300 for a 2500X to which I then added a sampling option and the ROMs.  After doing some repairs, I’m all in at $600 or so and the keyboard is like new. 😊

It happens when the felt dries out in the key bed.  A bit of petroleum jelly on the felt and you’re good to go.

Squeaky keys is more of an issue, but I completely reconditioned the key bed.  Had to replace two of the number key buttons as well, but those are cheap.

i think that sounds about right.

the main issue with older Ks is the clunk of key-up

or failed buttons

I don’t know, but I paid $300 for a 2500X to which I then added a sampling option and the ROMs.  After doing some repairs, I’m all in at $600 or so and the keyboard is like new. 😊

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I got started down the wrong path when I saw a PC2X on utube with the (weighted) key (bottom "hook" look)- but later and after my post saw one like my semi-weighted PC2(76) key ends come straight down- nothing to contact coming up. I did not want to open board as I purchased a warranty but recall reading online about the screws that adjust the key bed rails and noticed keys very close to case metal-- and the slots would move the keys up from the metal edge where the noise was. -- So I loosened those screws and it slid down -- the noise went away for every single KEY! Works fine! (maybe got banged in shipping and moved down toward the edge - who knows?)

Thanks for all the replies! This one looks like a keeper for a used one.

Now I just need to see if I can get that old PC2 manager program - last post I saw after Sonikmatter defunct was someone making it available non-commercial few years ago but is dead link. That fast rotary is HORRIBLE and could not find how to change it through screen - hoping program will allow tweaking.

allow me please to disagree.every old K I have played in varied cities has had the same problem..it becomes obvious if certain less-used notes do not clunk on key-up.trust me..I joined Local 47 in 1965

This is likely more than rubber bumpers. There's a known design weakness in the Fatar keybeds used in the PC2.  A plastic bit breaks. I ordered a complete new keybed for mine.
